Revision #5

THEOLOGY AND CULTURE #2: Pluralism

Pluralism is where differing cultural and religious factors are all within one society. These factors are such as language, values, beliefs, heritages and ideologies. There are three differing experiences of pluralism:

ECCLESIOLOGY #2: The relationship between church and state

There are two essential divisions each with two subdivisions. The first division is between those who believe that the church and state are conjoined and work together and the second is that the church and state are separate spheres. In those who see church and state conjoined, there are those who believe that church rules over state and those that the state rules over the church. Within those who see church and state as separate, there are those who see that the church should be completely independent and those that see that the church should inform the state and that the state should promote the church.

ECCLESIOLOGY #1: Women in ministry

There are essentially two views on the level of involvement of women in ministry, the egalitarian viewpoint and the complimentarian. The egalitarian is the easiest to define as this perspective holds that women can do all things that men can. The complimentarian perspective is a spectrum of views with differing level of women’s involvement.

THEOLOGY AND CULTURE #1: The essential characteristics of postmodernity

Postmodernity is a somewhat elusive cultural phenomenon that has gained popularity since the early 1900s and especially came to fruition in the post-war world probably reaching its peak in the 80s and 90s. Revision #1

I’m approaching exam period (2 weeks, covering 5 subjects, starting 5th May) so I’ll be posting some of my revision notes up here which will anticipate certain subjects and even questions coming up.

ESCHATOLOGY #1: What is the relationship between the parousia, the general resurrection and the final judgement?

parousia is a Greek word which means a coming, arrival or presence. In secular usage it is used to refer to the arrival of an emperor or distinguished person. Theologically, it is the definitive, decisive and openly evident coming of Jesus. Other Greek terms used for this event are epiphaneia, which means an appearing or manifestation, and apokalupsis which is used for revelation.

Dear Fred

If you’re not sure why I’m addressing this post to Fred, it’s because of the comment he posted and the questions he raised on the about page (though it has now been removed and posted below). His concerns are well put and quite reflective of contemporary perspectives. Fred opens his comment with these words: “I always find it puzzling how anyone can consider “the Bible” as the authoritative source of knowledge of “Christ.” How can “the Bible” be considered authoritative when it’s accuracy and authenticity are dubious? “

Jim and Casper Go to Church

By Jim Henderson and Matt Casper

I took this book on holiday with me wanting an enjoyable and entertainingly easy to read book for relaxing whilst also stimulating. This book fulfilled such a purpose; I did thoroughly enjoy reading it and really couldn’t put it down (excuse the cliché, but it’s true).

The concept is great. Jim is a Christian, was a pastor, then gave it up to paint houses, and no runs a ministry to aid evangelism called Off The Map. Casper is an Atheist. He was sprinkled as a Catholic, but only nominally and went to Presbyterian Churches with his mum (who sang in choirs) occasionally though his dad is a thoroughly convinced Atheist. Casper is quite convinced though he is open minded.

Dissertating Done

Well, my dissertation is practically done. All that’s left is the final formatting. It’s available online here. Approaching the end of it in the last few minutes of writing, Asbo Jesus posted this which is very, very apt:
