Hoffi Coffee

Well, at the closing ceremony for WEST, during my interview I was asked what I had lined up in terms of ministry. I jokingly said that I had nothing and would probably end up on Job Seeker’s Allowance. It turns out I can’t claim JSA since my wife is on a well enough paid job and because we’re savers not spenders!

My hopes of getting a job, I thought, were slim to none, especially since there are quite a few days off that I’ll need during the summer. I heard about a position stacking shelves in a well known supermarket that 100 people went for, most of whom had professional careers beforehand. Since I couldn’t claim JSA I thought I’d have a go at getting a job. I printed up a ’stand-out’ CV specifically tailored for coffee shop work, printed on card to make it durable, and went to town, literally, handing out CVs to every coffee shop in the city centre andaround the corner. I even went into one job agency only to be sent back out again straight away saying they didn’t want to waste my time and that they wouldn’t be able to get me a job.

Two days later, I got a call from Hoffi Coffee offering me a Friday and Saturday job working 10:30-3:30, which is perfect as it means I can carry on my decorating in the house. They were even willing to let me have loads of days off! Situated on Woodville Road in Cathays, Cardiff, Hoffi Coffee (Welsh for ‘I like Coffee’) offers not only speciality coffees (cappuccinos, lattes, mochas, etc) but also has a wide selection of food including cooked all-day breakfasts. God’s sovereignty at work I think!

As soon as decissions are made about ministry positions, which we’re praying very hard about and have been exploring with various churches since October, I’ll let you know. Churches take much longer to take on employees than coffee shops!

Just remember what happened when Peyton Jones started working at Starbucks, Swansea – a year later he’d planted a church!!! Just make sure that as well as wearing your apron you keep your gospel-goggles on too! God bless you mate…

PS – if you’re at a loose end over the summer…
