Let’s visit the topic of apostles again. I’m convinced that there were twelve founding Apostles for the church. I don’t accept apostolic succession such that the apostles’ successors had the same foundational standing. I should also point out that I’m willing to speak of a lesser level of apostle that isn’t on the same level as the twelve. Perhaps we can make a distinction between Apostles (sent ones) of Christ and just apostles (sent ones), the ones of Christ being those who are sent out by Christ.

As soon as you start accepting the at least some level of apostles can and should be around today, you have a decision to make. That is, are apostles on the same level as the 12 original apostles of Christ. If they are, then with that comes a level of authority. The idea would be that since, after Judas killed himself, the remaining 11 decided to choose another disciple to be an apostle, so that process should carry on and there should always be apostles to be on the same level as the original 12. This process is called apostolic succession and eventually led the Roman Catholic Church down the Pope route!
