I’ve just posted my review of the book, God.ol.o.gy by Christian George over on the The proGnosis. For the sake of completeness, I’ve also added it to my list of book reviews on the
book review page, because I would be irritated if it weren’t! Read it in either place. I’ve now started reading Bible Overview by Steve Levy with Paul Blackham. I may review it when I’ve finished it… if I’m feeling brave and up to it!

PART TWO – THE PRACTICE OF APOSTOLIC, CHRISTOCENTRIC PREACHING
The Epistle to the Hebrews as an Apostolic Preaching Paradigm
One of the problems is that there is little apostolic preaching in the New Testament, at least not the regular Sunday style preaching. This means we haven’t got so many examples to mimic. The redemptive-historical Christ-centred hermeneutic is abundant in their writing, however.

Challenges to Apostolic Preaching
The preacher is torn between the desire to preach Christ in all the scriptures, as he is the only means of salvation and sanctification, but also of being faithful to the text itself, where a Christocentric emphasis may feel artificial. “We want to preach Christ, but we also want to preach each text with integrity” (p.128).

PART I – THE CASE FOR APOSTOLIC, CHRISTOCENTRIC PREACHING
Priorities and Polarities in Preaching
How you preach will be controlled by what you see as the purpose of preaching, which will be controlled by the fullness of your theology. Throughout the centuries different understandings of salvation have produced different preaching.

Author of our Preaching and Pastoral Theology II text, Bryan Chapell, says of the book:
If only we could learn to preach like Peter and Paul. The wish becomes solid reality in Dennis Johnson’s wonderful advocacy of preaching Jesus Christ in the twenty-first century as the apostles did in the first. Under Johnson’s tutelage, preaching apostolic, Christ-centred, redemptive-historical, missiological sermons that are grace-driven becomes a dream within reach.
