The emerging church, by its nature is a hard to define. It has been going on for around a decade and seeks to reach a generation of those who were born into a postmodern society. Others would define the emerging church within the stream of church movements and would place it as a post-seeker-sensitive church. It is certainly a post-something church, here are some things it is post to:
Pluralism is where differing cultural and religious factors are all within one society. These factors are such as language, values, beliefs, heritages and ideologies. There are three differing experiences of pluralism:
Postmodernity is a somewhat elusive cultural phenomenon that has gained popularity since the early 1900s and especially came to fruition in the post-war world probably reaching its peak in the 80s and 90s. Some are already considering postmodernity to be finished yet others suppose that due to postmodernity’s all-embracing character, there is nothing else to move on to anymore.
I was speaking in a Christian Union in a university last night. And I noticed that they’re actually really postmodern. Now I am postmodern, there’s no point denying it, I was raised in a postmodern culture. But the big difference is that I was raised in postmodern culture though also in a modern church and was and am quite happy with that. They’re not.
